STAVROS MELISSINOS
“THE POET SANDAL MAKER OF ATHENS”
1929 – 2025
A crossroad of poetry, art & home of bespoke Greek leather sandals
Stavros Melissinos, internationally known as The Poet Sandal Maker, was a Greek poet, sandal maker, and one of the most iconic figures of Athens from the mid-1950s through the 1990s. In the early 1950s, he took over his family’s shoemaking workshop and transformed it into a legendary destination for celebrities, artists, writers, musicians, actors, and travelers from around the world.
Inspired by ancient Greek footwear, Melissinos was the first to reintroduce handmade ancient Greek sandals into modern fashion and everyday life, reviving a classical form and turning it into a timeless symbol of Athens, summer, freedom, and elegance.
His famous workshop welcomed many celebrated visitors, including The Beatles, Jackie Onassis, Sophia Loren, Rudolf Nureyev, Maria Callas, and many others, who came not only for sandals but also to experience the rare spirit of the poet-sandal maker himself.
Today, this living heritage continues under the direction of his son, Pantelis Melissinos — poet, artist, and sandal maker — at Melissinos Art – The Poet Sandal Maker, where handmade sandals, poetry, art, and the soul of Athens remain inseparably connected.
